Linux Terminal FAQ

Can I use a Linux terminal online for free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up. A real Linux 6.19 kernel with BusyBox boots on an emulated x86 PC inside your browser tab, so commands behave as they would on a small Linux machine.

Which commands can I run?

The BusyBox tools (ls, cat, grep, sed, awk, find, vi, top, tar and many more), plus nano, htop, Lua and MicroPython: plenty for practising the shell and writing scripts.

Can I paste commands and copy the output?

Yes. The Terminal panel is a second shell: paste commands with Ctrl+V and select text to copy the output. Full-screen programs such as nano work best on the main screen.

Is it safe to try any command?

Yes. The machine lives only in this tab, so even a command that wipes the disk only breaks the emulated system. Reload the page and start Linux again for a fresh one.

Do my files leave my computer?

No. Files you add stay on your device, and a saved state is kept in your browser's storage.
