How does a flat PNG become 3D?

Each pixel’s brightness sets the height of the plate at that point. Bright parts rise in a relief; in a lithophane, dark parts are thicker so less light passes through.

Does transparency count?

Transparent pixels are treated as white: lowest in a relief, thinnest in a lithophane.

Can I turn a logo into a solid 3D shape instead?

For a cut-out shape with straight walls, trace the logo with the free Image to DXF converter and extrude the DXF in your CAD program.
