Does AI Save Uploaded Images When Using an Image API?

Yes, an image API may store an uploaded image long enough to process it; do not assume the file disappears when the response arrives. Under WaveSpeedAI’s current upload API guide, uploaded inference files are retained for seven days. Its separate retention policy says generated media generally expires within seven days, while some metadata and logs can remain longer for operational or legal reasons.

Distinguish the file you supplied from the generated file you receive. The upload flow returns a URL that a model can use as an input, which means the source image exists beyond the immediate browser action. Your app may also hold a copy before upload, and you may copy the output into your own storage after generation. Those copies follow different retention and access rules. Map them separately when you write your privacy notice.

For sensitive photos, minimize what users upload, strip unnecessary metadata where appropriate, control who can retrieve source and output URLs, and set a deletion policy for your own buckets. Ask the API provider how subprocessors, support cases and backup or legal exceptions affect your data. The public retention page is a starting point, not a promise that every related record vanishes on one date.

If your product requires immediate deletion or a stricter data boundary, confirm that requirement contractually before sending real user images. Test with non-sensitive assets until the storage path is understood end to end.
