How Do I Get a WaveSpeedAI API Key and Activate It?

Overview

Create a WaveSpeedAI API key in the account’s API Keys area, name it, generate it and copy it into secure server-side storage. The current quickstart says a new key is active immediately; topping up is not an activation step. Billable model calls still require sufficient credits, and some models require a paid organization.

Do not place the key in browser code, a public repository or a client-side mobile bundle. Use a secret manager or protected environment variable, and give access only to the application service that submits tasks. WaveSpeedAI’s quickstart uses the key as a bearer credential on a model-specific POST request. For a first smoke test, select a route whose current page you have read, send a valid small input and retain the returned prediction ID. Retrieve the result through the documented result endpoint. A failed call should be diagnosed as an authentication, entitlement, balance, input or model-route issue; these are different from “activation.”

If the key is exposed, rotate it and investigate usage. Keep development and production credentials separate where your account setup allows. Limit who can create keys and review charges before giving an automated workload access.

The key grants an API identity, not universal access to every model. Check the selected route and account conditions before promising users that a specific generation feature is available.

When the smoke test succeeds, record only the key’s identifier or environment name in operational notes, never the secret itself. Also verify that result retrieval works before treating the integration as ready.
