Where do I get an EAN-13 number?

From the GS1 office in your country, which licenses a company prefix to you. Shops and marketplaces check product numbers against GS1, so made-up or resold numbers may be refused. Once you have your numbers, make the barcodes here for free.

How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?

Multiply the 12 digits alternately by 1 and 3 from the left, add them up, and the check digit is what takes the total to the next multiple of 10. The generator does this for you and tells you if a typed check digit is wrong.

Can I make a barcode for a book (ISBN)?

Yes. A 13-digit ISBN is an EAN-13 starting with 978 or 979; enter it without hyphens. Add a 5-digit add-on for the price if your market uses one.

What size should an EAN-13 barcode be?

At 100% it is 37.29 × 25.93 mm, and it can be printed from 80% to 200%. Keep the blank margins either side clear and avoid cutting the bar height.
