How Do Webhooks Work for AI Video Generation?

Overview

A webhook lets an AI video service notify your HTTPS endpoint when a submitted generation task completes or fails. Your app still needs to save the original task ID, authenticate the callback and fetch the authoritative result when needed. A webhook is a delivery signal, not permanent storage for the finished video.

In a WaveSpeedAI workflow, your backend submits a video job with a callback destination supported by the route. It stores a local job record and the provider’s prediction ID. On callback, match the event to that record, verify the signature using the provider’s webhook guidance, then update the job only once. Fetch or confirm the result before showing it to a user. WaveSpeedAI documents completion/failure callbacks and recommends result retrieval if a callback is missed; this is why a periodic reconciliation worker remains useful even when webhooks are enabled.

Expect duplicate or out-of-order delivery in your own handler design. Make processing idempotent, avoid trusting a URL or status solely because it appears in an inbound request, and keep a record of failed event processing. Do not expose the callback endpoint as a general command interface to your media store.

Use polling when webhooks are unavailable or while testing a route, then add callbacks when volume justifies the operational work. The success condition is that a user sees the right approved clip once, even if notification delivery is imperfect.

Monitor callback age, verification failures and unresolved prediction IDs as separate signals. These measures distinguish a slow generation job from a delivery problem in your own webhook handler.
