How Do AI Credits Work for Generation APIs?

Overview

AI credits are a prepaid balance that is drawn down when you run billable generation tasks; a credit balance does not represent a fixed number of images or video seconds across all models. On WaveSpeedAI, the current pricing guide describes top-up credits and per-model usage charges. The same balance can therefore last very different lengths of time depending on route and settings.

Before a task, identify its price unit. An image route may quote per output, while a video route may quote by generated time or a route-specific configuration. WaveSpeedAI shows an estimated charge before generation and has a model-price API for specified inputs; the final task charge is the billing record to reconcile. Do not infer credit consumption from the cheapest setting on a pricing table if your app requests longer, higher-resolution or audio-enabled output.

For team controls, track balance, estimated task cost, completed charge and budget owner in your own ledger. Reserve a margin for retries and creative rejects, then alert before a campaign exhausts its available balance. Separate the platform’s credit accounting from what you bill your customers: you may need to price human review, media storage and customer support as well.

If a provider offers promotional or differently funded credits, read the current account terms before treating them like purchased balance. The safe planning unit is the current quote for your exact request, measured against the usable outputs it produces.
