Which Third-Party Terms Should Teams Check for AI Model APIs?
Review each AI route's provider license, commercial rights, input rules, output restrictions, attribution duties, data handling and change terms.

Overview
Teams should check the selected model provider’s license and use policy as well as the API platform’s terms before shipping a feature. A platform’s general commercial-use statement does not override an upstream model’s restrictions, and technical access does not prove permission to advertise, redistribute or process every kind of input.
Create a route-level terms record. Capture the provider and model/version, permitted commercial use, restrictions on input and output categories, consent requirements for people or voices, attribution or disclosure obligations, data-handling commitments, geographic or customer-type limits where stated, and what happens when terms change. WaveSpeedAI’s commercial-use policy explicitly says model rules vary; its Terms address Customer Data as between customer and platform but do not warrant output uniqueness or non-infringement. For a marketing feature, also check the ad network’s rules and the team’s rights to images, logos and music.
Assign an owner for periodic rechecks. A model switch can change the applicable provider even if the app’s API shape stays similar. Keep a record of which route generated each asset so a later license change can be traced to affected outputs. If a provision is ambiguous, request written clarification instead of filling the gap with a blog summary.
This is an operational review checklist, not legal advice. The correct decision depends on the exact terms and intended use; get qualified review for high-stakes campaigns or regulated material.
Keep the reviewed terms snapshot, review date and approver beside the route record. That evidence helps procurement and engineering distinguish an intentional approval from an undocumented assumption when a provider policy changes.
