Which files should you hand over?
For a one-off WaveSpeed enlargement, hand over the untouched original and the checked PNG, JPG or WebP output. The browser route does not create an editable layer project.
For a GIMP retouch that another editor must revise, keep three distinct files: the untouched original; the XCF working project with editable changes; and the delivery image created with File → Export As. GIMP's file guide explains that saving the project and exporting another format are different operations. Reopen the XCF to verify that the requested layer can still be changed, and open the exported PNG or JPG to verify dimensions and visible detail. Do not substitute the flat export for the XCF when future editing is part of the brief.
Browser enhancer or installed editor?
“Free software” can mean different deliverables. WaveSpeed’s free browser tool runs the enlargement on your device, offers 2×, 3× or 4×, and documents no account, watermark or daily limit. GIMP’s official description identifies it as freely distributed software for retouching, image composition and authoring. That makes it an installed editing option when enlargement alone will not finish the job.

For example, a club volunteer with a 1000-pixel-wide event photo and a 2000-pixel-wide website slot can calculate that 2× may be enough, then inspect faces in the saved file. If the club also needs to replace a damaged corner and retain separate design elements, an installed editor is the clearer fit. This is a task decision, not a claim that either application made a better image in a controlled test.
What's capped on the free version?
- The free browser tool lists inputs up to 50 MB, no daily limit and no watermark; it offers 2×, 3× and 4× enlargement on your device.
- On-device browser processing still depends on your device's memory and browser capabilities; a 50 MB allowed input is not a promise that every device will finish quickly.
Checking faces, text, and product edges for accuracy
For either route, compare the original and saved delivery image at the same display size. Inspect eye shape and hair in a portrait, every letter in a product label, and a straight high-contrast edge. Record the source width, chosen upscale factor or editor operation, saved width and any failed region.
If the recipient needs both a sharper listing image and later text changes, deliver the enhanced flat image and a separate editable design project. Verify each file against its own job instead of calling a larger PNG an editable source.
Exporting for web, ecommerce, or print
