THREE SIMPLE STEPS

How to add Bates numbers to PDFs

01

Add your PDFs

Drop one or more PDFs and put them in order. The numbers run through the files in that order.

02

Set the format

Choose prefix, start number, digits and where the number goes. The preview shows the page as it will come out.

03

Number and download

Each file is saved as its range, e.g. ABC000001-ABC000045.pdf, together in a ZIP with a CSV index.

BUILT FOR PRODUCTIONS

Everything a Bates stamp needs

One sequence for the whole set

Numbering continues from file to file in the order you set, starting from any number, so a production can pick up where the last one ended.

Your format

Prefix and suffix, zero-padding to any number of digits, standard fonts, size and colour, and one of six positions with your margins.

An extra line

Add a second line like “Confidential” or the production date, with {date}, {file}, {page} and {pages} filled in for you.

Readable on any page

A white box behind the stamp keeps it legible over text and pictures. Rotated and cropped pages are stamped the way they are displayed.

Named and indexed

Files come back named by Bates range, in one ZIP with a CSV index listing each file’s first and last number and page count.

Checked

The numbers are read back from the first and last page of every new file, so you know they are really there as searchable text.

Bates numbering FAQ

Is this Bates numbering tool free?

Yes. Number as many files and pages as you like, with no account and no watermark.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The PDFs are numbered in your browser and never leave your device.

Does numbering continue across files?

Yes. Put the files in order; the first page of each file continues from the last page of the one before. Set the start number to continue an earlier production.

How are the files named?

By their Bates range, like ABC000001-ABC000045.pdf (a one-page file gets just its number). Several files download as one ZIP with a CSV index: file, output name, first and last number, pages.

Can I add a date or “Confidential”?

Yes. Type it in Extra line. {date} is replaced by the date you pick, {file} by the file name, {page} and {pages} by the page number and page count of that file.

Is the number searchable?

Yes. It is real text in a standard font, so you can search for a Bates number in any PDF reader.

What doesn’t it do?

It doesn’t open password-protected PDFs (open and save an unlocked copy first), and labels use standard fonts, so letters outside Western European alphabets are left out. Digital signatures become invalid once pages are stamped.
